Joe Townsend’s Hand Cycle Road to Kona
his story is awesome. no excuses. none whatsoever.
The road to Kona is often well traveled and wrought with tales of true-life accounts that serve to inspire, amaze and continue to wow people around the world.
Four and a half years ago Joe Townsend’s mother was told to come and say goodbye to her son. Townsend, a Royal Marine Commando injured in Afghanistan, was fighting for his life in intensive care. For six weeks the only news his family back home in England would receive was when the phone rang in the dead of night to tell them their son was being rushed back into the operating theatre.
Fast-forward to 2012 and Townsend is on the start line in Kona this weekend after qualifying in the hand cycle category at IRONMAN UK. Townsend completed the race last year as the UK’s first double amputee to race IRONMAN UK. He made the journey along with other members of the fast growing Team True Spirit – an organization created to help injured serviceman and women adjust to life after injury during service.
